In 1986 he received a much-deserved star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Walter Lantz retired in 1972 and in 1979 he received a special Academy Award for bringing joy and laughter to every part of the world through his unique animated motion pictures. During his time with Universal Walter Lantz contributed to and created such beloved characters as Woody Woodpecker, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Space Mouse, Homer Pigeon, Chilly Willy, Andy Panda, and Charlie Chicken. In 1927 he moved to Hollywood and was hired by Universal Studios as an animator, director, and independent producer. By the age of 25 he had directed, animated, and even starred in his first cartoon series. Bray Studios when still in High School, where he worked on the Jerry on the Job series.
